HATEM DARWISH

Mr. Hatem Darweesh, Partner, joined ZH&P in December 2016 bringing aboard diverse experience in arbitration and complex litigation.  His arbitration and dispute resolution practice focuses on the sectors of telecommunications, construction, agencies, hotel management and insurance.  He served as a sole arbitrator, a party-appointed arbitrator and counsel in many local and international commercial arbitrations under a variety of arbitration rules, including ICC, ICSID, CRCICA and UNCITRAL.   

Mr. Darweesh was a Teaching Assistant at the Faculty of Law of Cairo University from the year 2000 through 2010.  He also briefly served as State Commissioner in the Egyptian State Council.  Before joining ZH&P, Mr. Darweesh was a Partner in Shalakany Law Office and Baker & McKenzie, Cairo. 

  With over 16 years of practical and academic experience, his notable representations and appointments include:

- Representing a major Chinese telecommunications company in a multi-million dollar dispute in connection with a cooperation agreement (ad hoc).

Representing a major Egyptian telecommunications company in a number of annulment litigation proceedings.

-  Representing a major telecommunications company in a multi-million dollar arbitration in a dispute in connection with a share-purchase agreement (ad hoc).

- Representing the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt in ICSID arbitration proceedings (Waguih Siag et al. v. the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt).

Representing a major Egyptian insurance company in a multi-billion dollar arbitration against an Egyptian bank under the Arbitration Rules of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA).

Party-appointed arbitrator in a multi-million dollar dispute in connection with failure to perform seller’s obligations under a share purchase agreement under the Arbitration Rules of Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA).

Party-appointed arbitrator in a multi-million dollar dispute in connection with uncollected agency fees under the Arbitration Rules of CRCICA.

Party-appointed arbitrator in a multi-million dollar construction dispute under the Arbitration Rules of CRCICA.

Sole arbitrator in a service provision dispute under the under the Arbitration Rules of CRCICA.

 He is member of the Egyptian Bar Association since 2000 and is listed as Arbitrator in CRCICA’s Arbitrator’s List since 2010. 

 Mr. Darweesh received the LL.B and the LL.M. from Cairo University’s Faculty of Law in 2000 and 2002 – respectively.  He also achieved a second LL.M. from Harvard Law School, Cambridge MA USA, in 2005.
